Meet Vera Zheng, a Young Professional in the FY25 YP cohort.

What motivated you to apply to the YP Program?
My motivation to apply to the World Bank Group (WBG) Young Professional Program (YPP) came from a deep commitment to leverage finance for sustainable development and inclusive growth. With my background in banking and finance, I have always sought opportunities to create positive social impact. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) within the WBG offered a unique platform to advance this mission. As someone with experience in the private sector and limited exposure to development finance institutions, the Bank Group¡¯s YPP was the perfect gateway¡ªproviding access and structured learning that helped me transition to a purpose-driven career within development finance. This journey has been transformative. Personally, the program broadened my global perspective and strengthened my ability to work across cultures and all five WBG organizations (IBRD, IDA, IFC, MIGA and ICSID). Professionally, this opportunity facilitated my entry into the World Bank Group and allowed me to become part of IFC, while providing valuable training and experience that have proven instrumental for a rewarding career in global development and finance.

What is unique about the YP Program?
What makes YPP truly unique is the chance to rotate across institutions, sectors, and regions within the WBG. These experiences deepened my understanding of how the organization operates on a global scale and gave me invaluable international exposure. The YPP community itself is an incredible asset¡ª I learned as much from my peers as from the program. The connections I have made have broadened my perspective and created a lasting network of passionate professionals; all committed to advancing development together.

Please share your advice for aspiring YPPs
If you're passionate about development and share the Bank Group¡¯s mission and vision, I strongly encourage you to apply. For me, WBG YPP is more than just a job - it¡¯s serving as a transformative platform where I can grow, contribute meaningfully, and join a global community making real change in poor and middle-income countries worldwide. Bring your story, your purpose, and your ambition.  If you are ready to achieve meaningful change, you are already on the right path.
