With the technical support from the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) Energy Storage Program and the Korea-World Bank Partnership Facility (KWPF), as well as financial investment support from the World Bank (IDA), the Mauritanian National Power Utility - SOMELEC - is issuing a notice for an Early Market Engagement (EME) for the Mauritania Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, a first of the kind in the country.

This procurement aims to integrate a grid-connected BESS in northern Nouakchott, supported by an energy management system, civil infrastructure, electrical connection to the national power grid, and training/skill transfer activities. It is part of a dynamic national effort to (i) maximize the integration of existing and future variable renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and (ii) enhance grid stability through voltage and frequency regulation.

The objectives of the EME are as follows:
- Assess market stakeholder interest in the project.
- Gather feedback on the technical requirements, potential challenges, and opportunities related to project implementation.
- Identify private sector suppliers, integrators, developers, and technical partners likely to participate in the project.
- Optimize the technical, operational, and contractual structuring of the project before the possible launch of a call for tenders.
