The Gender Innovation Lab Federation brings together the six World Bank Regional Gender Innovation Labs (GIL):

Africa (AFRGIL)?|?East Asia and Pacific (EAPGIL)?|?Europe and Central Asia (ECAGIL) | Latin America & Caribbean (LACGIL)?|?Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan & Pakistan (MENAAPGIL)?|?South Asia (SARGIL)

  • The Gender Innovation Labs (GILs) advance gender equality by combining rigorous analytical research with deep integration into operational programming, embedding gender considerations directly into project design and implementation, and bridging the gap between theory and practice.

  • GILs address critical knowledge gaps using innovative research and real-time feedback to operational teams, policymakers, and development practitioners to guide interventions and ensure that strategies are adaptable, effective, and scalable across diverse country contexts.

  • With six regional labs collaborating closely with the Gender Group and other World Bank teams, GILs generate and synthesize evidence-based solutions, tackle frontier issues, and provide advisory support that shapes operational financing and policy reforms to drive gender equality at scale. They play a crucial role in the implementation of the 2024-2030 World Bank Group Gender Strategy.

  • The GILs in AFR, EAP and MNA are housed by their regional Chief Economist Office. LAC GIL is housed by Poverty, SAR GIL is housed by Social Development (SD), and ECA GIL is housed by both Poverty and SD.

How the GILs Work

  • Identifying the underlying constraints to gender equality
  • Generating evidence on innovative solutions to address constraints
  • Ensuring that the evidence reaches policymakers and shapes policy dialogue in the region
  • Providing project teams with advice on evidence-based program design
  • Designing and testing effectiveness of innovative interventions to advance gender equality
