Globally, one in five people live in highly unequal societies. As part of our new vision to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet, the World Bank is now explicitly monitoring inequality. High inequality can hinder people's socioeconomic mobility and slow progress on shared prosperity and poverty reduction. In July 2025, the World Bank and partners brought together leading experts and practitioners to explore how economic inequality affects development and what the latest data and research reveals about potential policy solutions.
