THE WORLD BANK GROUP IN SOUTH ASIA

South Asia Development Update: October 2025

We work across South Asia to create more jobs and strengthen resilience to economic and climate-related shocks.

South Asia is not creating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly growing working-age population. The region has over 700 million people under age 24, and more than one million young people are expected to enter the labor force each month through 2030. Private investment and robust business growth are essential to meet this demand. A key priority is increasing women’s labor force participation, as only one in three women in South Asia are currently in the workforce. We support countries through targeted policy reforms, skills programs, infrastructure investments, and analytical work to help create jobs.

South Asia is also one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. Since 2010, natural disasters have affected an average of about 67 million people each year. Nearly 48 percent of the population lives in climate hotspots, where unpredictable rainfall and rising temperatures are reducing crop yields, worsening water scarcity, and displacing people. We support investments to improve livability across the region, including climate adaptation and mitigation, climate-smart agriculture, better access to climate information, improved water resource management, effective coastal and fisheries management, biodiversity conservation, and air quality management.

OUR PRIORITIES
IN SOUTH ASIA
We are committed to working across South Asia to create jobs and boost resilience.

Job Creation

A woman works at a sewing machine in a factory.

South Asia is not generating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly expanding working-age population. Concerted action is needed to catalyze private-sector job creation—especially for youth and women.

Climate Resilience

Without urgent, proactive investments in adaptation and resilience, climate shocks could reverse decades of hard-won economic and development gains in South Asia.

Nutrition

South Asia is home to one-third of the world’s children affected by stunting. We are committed to ending childhood hunger and malnutrition so every child can thrive.
