THE WORLD BANK GROUP IN SOUTH ASIA
South Asia Development Update: October 2025
We work across South Asia to create more jobs and strengthen resilience to economic and climate-related shocks.
South Asia is not creating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly growing working-age population. The region has over 700 million people under age 24, and more than one million young people are expected to enter the labor force each month through 2030. Private investment and robust business growth are essential to meet this demand. A key priority is increasing women’s labor force participation, as only one in three women in South Asia are currently in the workforce. We support countries through targeted policy reforms, skills programs, infrastructure investments, and analytical work to help create jobs.
BY THE NUMBERS: SOUTH ASIA
Job Creation
South Asia is not generating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly expanding working-age population. Concerted action is needed to catalyze private-sector job creation—especially for youth and women.
Climate Resilience
Without urgent, proactive investments in adaptation and resilience, climate shocks could reverse decades of hard-won economic and development gains in South Asia.
Nutrition
South Asia is home to one-third of the world’s children affected by stunting. We are committed to ending childhood hunger and malnutrition so every child can thrive.
